We always do research on craft subjects before we head to the craft table. We were especially interested in making paper plate animal crafts, because we're big animal lovers! Our own personal menagerie consists of three dogs and one cat (who thinks he's a dog). But that's another story. Right now, it's all about paper plates and what you can create with them! Maya loves making puppets, so her challenge became how to create some using paper plates. Here are two examples of her creativity.

Monkey Template

Materials for the Monkey Puppet

Two white paper plates
One pink craft foam sheet
Brown and pink construction paper
A black marker
Brown and white paint (tempra or goache)
Scissors
Stapler
Glue
Our Monkey Template

Instructions:

Paint one paper plate with brown paint. Set aside and let dry.

In the meantime, print out our template and cut out the pieces. Transfer them onto construction paper and cut out. Glue in place to the back of your painted (dry) paper plate.

Cut the second paper plate in half. Take one half and line it up to the decorated paper plate. Staple together around the outer edge. This should form a pocket on the back side of your puppet. You will place your hand there to operate the puppet.

That's it! You've just completed your first (of many, we hope) paper plate animal crafts!
