Sugar Cookies

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 recipe Powdered Sugar Icing
  • Candies for decoration

Instructions:

  • In a large mixing bowl beat butter and shortening with an electric mixer
  • Add sugar, baking powder and salt. Beat until combined
  • Beat in egg and the vanilla
  • Beat in the flour
  • Divide the dough and refrigerate for three hours
  • On a lightly covered work surface, roll half of the dough to 1/8-1/4" thick
  • Use cookie cutters to cut out desired shapes
  • Place on ungreased cookie sheet
  • Bake at 375 F for 7-8 minutes or until lightly browned.
  • Cool on wire rack
  • Decorate with Powdered Sugar Icing and decorative candy


Powdered Sugar Icing

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups sifted powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 tablespoons milk
Combine all ingredients in a bowl until the prosting reaches the consistency you want. You made need to add additional milk--do so 1 teaspoon at a time.

Tint with food coloring if desired.

Makes 1 cup of frosting
